What to do in Serra da Estrela in winter: 10 activities
Snow on the Torre, white 4x4 tracks, the sun rising over a sea of clouds and Serra cheese at its best: the 10 best things to do in Serra da Estrela in winter.
Key takeaways
- Snow falls mostly between December and March, most often in January and February
- The road to the Torre often closes with snow: check before you set off
- It is Serra cheese season, traditionally made from November to March
- Dark comes early: long nights for stargazing and sunsets before dinner
Why Serra da Estrela in winter?
It is the only place in mainland Portugal where snow is almost guaranteed every winter. Between December and March the Torre, at 1,993 metres, stays white for weeks, and the granite villages around it light their fires.
But winter is not only about snow. It is when the sea of clouds appears most often at dawn, when the sky gets dark early and clear for stargazing, and when Serra cheese is at its best. With the right clothes and someone who knows the roads, it is one of the most beautiful seasons to come.
1. See and play in the snow
The Torre, Penhas da Saúde and the Lagoa Comprida area are where snow lasts longest. On heavy snow days the access roads can close, so always check before setting off and carry snow chains.
We explain where there is most snow, which roads close and what to bring in our Snow in Serra da Estrela guide.
2. 4x4 tour on snowy tracks
When there is snow, a 4x4 takes you where a normal car cannot: white mountain tracks, empty viewpoints and landscapes that only exist a few days a year. We run the tours whenever safety conditions allow, and the guide chooses the route on the day.

3. Sunrise above the sea of clouds
In autumn and winter, cold mornings fill the valleys with fog and, from above, the mountain looks like an island. The Sunrise 4x4 Tour starts at 06:00, takes you to the viewpoint before the sun comes up and ends with a mountain breakfast at the top.
4. Sunset by 4x4, before dinner
In December the sun sets around 17:30, leaving the evening free for a relaxed dinner. The Sunset 4x4 Tour ends with regional wine and a mountain food tasting at a viewpoint: shared at €79 per person or private from €120.
5. Skiing and sledging at the Torre
When there is enough snow, usually between December and March, the Serra da Estrela ski resort opens at the Torre, with beginner slopes and equipment hire. For children, a sledge and a snowy slope already make the day.
6. Long nights of stars
In winter it gets dark early and, on clear dry nights, the mountain sky is unusually sharp. It is the season of Orion, the Pleiades and Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. On our Stargazing experience we pick you up at your accommodation, take you to 2 or 3 viewpoints and bring a snack and a hot drink. Bring really warm clothes: at altitude, at night, it is properly cold.
7. Serra cheese at its best
Buttery Serra da Estrela cheese is traditionally made between November and March from the milk of Bordaleira sheep. It is the right time to taste it at cheese makers around Seia, Gouveia, Manteigas or Celorico da Beira, with rye bread and a red wine from the Beira.
8. Granite villages and fireplaces
Sabugueiro, the highest village in Portugal, Manteigas, at the bottom of the glacial valley, and Linhares da Beira, one of the Historic Villages, are especially beautiful in winter. For a full day of villages, castles, regional lunch and wine tasting, see the Between Castles and Wines experience.
9. Zêzere Glacial Valley and Covão d'Ametade
The U-shaped valley carved by ice is at its most striking in winter, with white peaks and the river running strong. Covão d'Ametade is a short, easy walk from the road. Watch out for ice early in the morning: wear shoes with good grip.
10. Warm waters at the spas
After a day in the cold, the thermal spas of Manteigas and Unhais da Serra are the most comfortable way to end the day. Book ahead on snowy weekends.
What to bring and how to prepare
Layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, hat, gloves and boots that can handle water and snow. In the car, snow chains and a full tank. Before leaving, check that the road to the Torre is open: with snow the authorities close access and you may get stuck halfway.
To combine snow, 4x4 and stars, plan at least 2 nights. Manteigas, Covilhã and Seia are good bases. Snowy weekends fill up fast: book guided activities in advance.
