What to pack for a 4x4 tour in Serra da Estrela

    20 April 2026 1 min

Clothing, footwear, camera and medication — a checklist prepared by local guides so you make the most of your 4x4 tour.

    Clothing by season

Mountain weather changes in minutes. Even in summer, wind and fog can drop the felt temperature to 10 °C. The rule is simple: wear layers. • Winter: thermal base, fleece, waterproof windbreaker, beanie, gloves, scarf • Spring/autumn: t-shirt, fleece, light waterproof jacket • Summer: t-shirt, light long-sleeve shirt, windbreaker (even if it's sunny down in the valley)

    Footwear

Trainers are enough for pure 4x4 tours (no trekking involved). If your tour includes short walks at viewpoints, choose grippy trainers or light hiking boots. In winter, avoid canvas shoes.

    Useful gear

    • Reusable water bottle (we provide water in the jeep) • Sunglasses — light at altitude is strong even on cloudy days • Sunscreen (summer and winter on snow) • Camera or phone with charged battery • Power bank for longer tours • Small backpack for personal items

    Health & comfort

Mountain roads are winding. If you suffer from motion sickness, take your usual medication 30 minutes before departure and ask for the front seat — let us know on booking. Eat a light meal beforehand.

    What you do NOT need

No ropes, helmets or technical gear — all our 4x4 tours stay onboard the jeep, no climbing. You also don't need personal insurance: we're covered by mandatory RNAAT insurance.
