- →All trails open with no snow at any altitude
Why Serra da Estrela in summer?
While Lisbon and the Algarve push past 35 °C, the Torre rarely exceeds 27 °C. At night, at altitude, it easily drops to 12 °C. For anyone escaping the heat, Serra da Estrela is the closest refuge — 3h from Lisbon, 2h from Porto.
Summer is also the best time for experiences you can't do other seasons: long walks with no snow risk, stargazing under clear skies and swims in pools fed by the May–June snowmelt.
1. Sunset 4x4 tour
The most-booked summer experience. Mid-afternoon departure, stops at strategic viewpoints and return as the sky turns pink. In July and August sunset is around 9pm, with nearly an hour of golden light.
Book our Sunset 4x4 Tour in Serra da Estrela — private, up to 4 people per jeep.
2. Stargazing and the Milky Way
Serra da Estrela has some of Western Europe's darkest skies. Between June and August, with the galactic core fully visible, the Milky Way crosses the sky from south to north. No telescope needed — just your eyes and 20 minutes of dark adaptation.
More on our Stargazing page.
3. Moonlit night hikes
At night the mountain cools down, sounds change, and the smell of heather intensifies. Guided hikes 2–5 km, headlamp provided, homemade snack. On full-moon nights you barely need the light.
4. Swimming in mountain pools and waterfalls
The Loriga pools, Poço do Inferno in Manteigas and the Cabreira waterfalls (Valhelhas) carry water until late July. From August the flow drops, but deeper pools remain. Bring towel, water sandals and respect — no fires.
5. Day hikes
Classic trails (Covão d'Ametade, Zêzere glacial valley, Cântaro Magro) are accessible without technical gear. Start early (before 9am) to avoid midday heat and carry 2 L of water per person.
6. Full-day 4x4 tour with lunch
For a complete day, our full-day 4x4 tour includes lunch in a mountain village, stops at lesser-known viewpoints and time to walk around.
7. Night photography workshop
If you bring a camera and tripod, July and August (new moon) are the best nights of the year to photograph the Milky Way over Serra granite. Workshops with a pro photographer, gear explained on-site.
8. Visit nearby historic villages
Linhares da Beira, Folgosinho, Sortelha and Belmonte are within 1h and perfect for a morning visit. Combine with our exclusive Between Castles and Wines experience, covering 3 villages in one day with lunch and wine tasting included.
9. Try fresh Serra cheese
Summer Serra cheese is milder than winter's (the sheep's diet changes). Look for cheese houses in Manteigas, Seia or Gouveia. Pair with rye bread and Beira wine.
10. Sunset from a drive-up viewpoint
If you prefer no guide, viewpoints at Senhora do Desterro (Manteigas), Cabeça do Velho (Caldas de Manteigas) or Penhas Douradas are minutes from the road and offer wide panoramas. Bring a jacket — at altitude the wind can blow even in August.
How to plan your trip
We recommend at least 3 nights to combine 4x4 + stars + trekking. Stay in Manteigas (most central), Covilhã (bigger town) or Seia (closer to western viewpoints). Book guided activities 1–2 weeks ahead — August fills up.
