Where and when to see the Milky Way in Serra da Estrela

Why is Serra da Estrela so good for stargazing?

Three factors combine: altitude (up to 1,993 m, often above low fog), low summer humidity and very low light pollution — the closest big cities (Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Guarda) are over 60 km away.

On the Bortle scale, several central areas reach class 2 or 3, comparable to the best skies of Trás-os-Montes or deep Alentejo.

When the galactic core (the prettiest part) is visible

The Milky Way core (with Sagittarius) is visible in Portugal from April to October, peaking in June, July and August. Best conditions combine: • New or waning moon (moonlight washes out faint stars) • Cloudless sky • Getting away from the city to an elevated dark spot

What you need to see it

Just your eyes. The Milky Way is naked-eye visible as a whitish band across the sky — you only need 20–30 minutes of dark adaptation (no phone screen without red filter).

For photography: a manual-mode camera, sturdy tripod, fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) and 15–25 second exposure.

How to avoid common mistakes

1. Check the moon calendar — a full moon kills 90% of stars 2. Check the weather (high clouds ruin everything) 3. Dress warmer than you think — at 1,500 m in July it can be 8 °C at night 4. Use a red flashlight or red-filter app — white light destroys night vision

Is it worth going with a guide?

If you've never properly stargazed, yes. A local guide knows the exact spots with an unobstructed southern horizon, brings a telescope, identifies constellations live and helps you save the night when weather is patchy (they know which side of the mountain is cloudless).
